BVI or USVI? How to Pick Your Day Charter
Most guests booking the Lusso out of Red Hook, St. Thomas ask the same first question: USVI or BVI? Both are full-day trips aboard the same boat, with the same captain and the same 39-foot Nor-Tech comfort — the difference is what's on the other side of the water.
USVI charters
A USVI-only day stays inside U.S. waters — St. John's beaches and anchorages, no border crossing, no paperwork. It's the simplest option if your group doesn't have passports handy or just wants a straightforward beach-and-snorkel day close to Red Hook.
BVI charters
A BVI run crosses into the British Virgin Islands, which means every guest needs a valid passport, and the trip includes customs and immigration clearance on both ends. It's worth it — Jost Van Dyke, Norman Island, and the Baths are all BVI anchorages — but it's a different logistics conversation than a USVI-only day, and customs fees aren't included in the base charter price.
Which one should you book?
If everyone in your group has a passport and you want the full island-hopping experience, go BVI. If you're short on time, traveling with kids who don't have passports yet, or just want an easy beach day, USVI covers it.
